Lick Of The Month #4

September's Lick Of The Month is one of Cannonball Adderley's from Freddie Freeloader. I chose this lick as I love the way he approaches the change from the last Ab7 of the tune back to the first Bb7. Here's the lick, skip to 7:25 to hear it.

As far as Adderley's note choice goes it is pretty safe, playing all mixolydian and mainly all chord tones. For me, it's the rhythms that make this lick work! The first phrase starts on a offbeat and ends on a offbeat which really makes it swing. The second phrase also starts on the down beat but finishes by holding the 7th for a quarter note on beat 4 giving the lick a kind of musical full stop.

Practicing this lick was a great way for me to break out of playing steady 8th note licks. In the four bars we've got quarter note triplets, eighth note triplets
as well as a quick 16th note run.

Here's the video, enjoy!
